National Society Of High School Scholars Legit: What to Know Before You Buy?
Is it restricted?
Yet according to these calculations, the NSHSS is not the only option. Many instances of grade inflation in American high schools have surfaced. Hence, if such is the case, many people can become members.
What Will Happen to Those Scholarships?
The general recommendation from guidance counsellors and other college admissions professionals is to decline any scholarship offers that require you to make a payment. I fail to understand how this differs. Even if there are a lot of possibilities available only to members, your chances of getting funding for your studies are slim. According to information on the organisation's website, the club has given out more than $1.1 million in scholarships to date, and over 100,000 new members join each year.
Scholarships NSHSS
In the letter we got, it was suggested that we might apply for special scholarships. It appears that the NSHSS awarded 10 $5,000 Claes Nobel prizes for the 2012–2013 academic year. They seem to have not been renewed. There were 75 National Scholar Award winners, who reportedly each got $1,000. Again, it appears that these are only valid for a year. More chances solely available to members are also listed on the website. Applications must be submitted in order to qualify. They include "Ambassador Awards" from NSHSS, which demand a 3.7 GPA. In 2012, three of these were distributed. Other STEM scholarships are also available, with prizes ranging from $5,000 to $1,000. There appear to be 20 in all.
Is NSHSS profitable?
If waived or reduced costs are included in 15% of yearly applications, the number of new members would still produce $5 million annually. For what appears to be a very tiny return to the kids, that is a shocking amount of money.
Brief Information About the NSHSS
2002 saw the founding of the National Association for High School Scholars. More than 750,000 people are reportedly members. Every year, over 100,000 new students enrol. If there is no hardship, joining usually costs $60. There are various options for partial fee exemptions. Only a small portion of the enrollment costs are awarded as scholarships.
Is It a Scam?
We were unable to ask our excellent guidance counsellor whether she endorses this organisation or even if she was aware of it because the letter arrived either at the conclusion of the school year or shortly after summer break began. So, I launched College Confidential, possibly the biggest and one of the least biassed online sources of information on colleges. Reviews of the NSHSS in its online community for kids and parents were conflicting. The majority of commenters didn't think it was expensive enough. Others said it was a con.
Several people likened it to winning the lottery. The majority opinion was that joining this club was OK but wouldn't help students gain admission to highly selective colleges or make them look good. NSHSS doesn't seem to be worth the money, effort, or difficulty, but I don't think it's a scam in the traditional definition of the word (when someone takes your money and goes). Students are lifelong members. They are given a membership card and a certificate. Also, the company provides a "tailored press release" (this is why you may see write-ups in your local newspaper about students being invited and accepted into the NSHSS).
